What has Covid taken away from us

The other day, I’ve seen a video of my tango teacher who was talking about dancing and what tango means to her. I’ve seen so much passion in her eyes and you could hear in her voice how much she misses dancing.

Then I realized what has Covid taken away from us.

I refuse to make a drama out of Covid and the current situation. I have adapted quite well to this crisis and I have accepted that we need to give up on our normal way of living and sacrifice some things in order to bring our life back to normal again one day.

However, I can’t say it’s easy or that I like this situation. I deeply feel how Covid took away from people one of the most valuable things in life: passion. The possibility to fulfill what humans' hearts desire. The need to express themselves through their hobbies. The drive to practice what makes their hearts sparkle.

For me, Covid took away tango. Well, it’s too much to say that tango it’s taken away from me because I am quite optimistic about starting everything again soon and practice my beloved dance as I used to.

For 2 and a half years, my routine was going to work 5 days per week and going 2 hours to tango every Monday and Thursday after work and Sunday after lunch for other 3 hours. That meant arriving home around 10 PM on tango days, but there was no day in the week to arrive happier and more fulfilled than after my tango practices.

If you would have met me on a Monday, Thursday, or Sunday, I always had a pair of tango shoes in my purse, a tango skirt to change in, and one of my favorite lipsticks that I loved applying before every practice. It was like a ritual!

Tango, for me, is therapy. The music, the movements, the motivation, the desire to succeed, the gorgeous tango shoes that make you feel you can conquer the world just by wearing them. Tango made me feel me. When I was practicing, I was feeling the most like myself than ever. It became something that defined me…and that is hard to take away from someone.

This dance makes you overcome your fear, it makes you face your problems directly and solve them, boost your self-confidence, and love and respect yourself as you are.

I am talking about tango with so much love and passion. I often dream of practicing tango, meeting again my friends and teachers from the tango community, feel the passion of dancing again.

I will surely go back to my normal routine as soon as I will be able to. And then…I am going to appreciate every step during my dance, every cross, and every ocho instead of letting my insecurities take over those precious moments when I am able to dance!
